Take the More Scenic Route this Holiday Season

Some of my favorite vacation memories often involve traveling with my family to the

various caravan parks and holiday lodges scattered across the countryside of the UK. I remember the excitement in my dad’s voice as he would pack up the caravan full of everything we needed for the next week. However, the things I remember most about those annual trips were often the routes we took to reach our destinations.

One year we planned on traveling through beautiful Cape Cornwall on our way to our log cabin holidays. This quaint town stands defiantly in the face of the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Cape Cornwall lies in the far west of county Cornwall, deep in the south-westerly reaches of England. Standing sentry against the intensity of the Atlantic, the town guards the town of St Just from the worst of the elements. Its coastline wears the scars of time, driving currents, wind and rain.

The last major town in England before the shipping graveyard of Land’s End is St. Just and it is long known for its treacherous stretch of rugged coastline. Despite all of this, it is a delightful little town offering many attractions and things to do. Minutes away from the ancient monument site of Carn Gluze on the Penwith Heritage Coast, it makes for an unforgettable attraction to see on your holiday lodges route.

As you continue traveling north along B3306 up from St Just, your family caravan will begin soon descend a steep gradient before passing through the sleepy village of Botallack. A little further along your route is the enchanting Pendeen, home to the old Geevor Tin Mines. I remember my father telling stories of this town and days gone by and its unenviable working practices.

As the coastal road continues northeast to your holiday parks destination you’ll travel through Morvah village and the excellent coastal observation post Gurnards Head. Here the panorama broadens to a visually stunning expanse of land as it slowly descends into the approaching sea. You and your family will be treated to beautiful colored plants and shrubs splashed across the ground towards the towering cliff tops. Be sure to stop alongside the road to smell a fusion of scents emanated from the vast array of flowers swaying in the ocean breeze. It’s like nothing else you will ever experience.

This narrow little road continued to twist and turn slowly through the pretty countryside. The fields and shrubs rescinded upon arrival of Zennor. Calm and peaceful, this serene village seemed the perfect antidote to the rigors of modern day city living. It makes for a wonderful stop along your trip.
